Have you always been successful?
Can you truthfully say that you have, on every task assigned to you, performed very well, and converted your efforts into good results?
The same is true with students. As it is they are battling with a very rigid, rigorous and ritualistic education system. Learning and abilities do not coincide with marks in exams. The Indian education system is Exam-centric rather than Learning-centric.
Some students have mathe-logical and linguistic intelligence and they excel in exams; others have many other very useful intelligences that not only do not help, but actually make matters worse when it comes to scoring marks.
Every year when the results come out, there are celebrations by a few, and much heart-burning in so many students. What makes matters worse is the expectations of the elders. Subtle messages are sent out throughout the crucial years to the student, hinting that due to excessive ‘competition’, only the toppers make it to a good future, and all others fall by the wayside. Hence a capable student who has all the potential to do well in life, one who has put in reasonable efforts towards studies, but has not scored ‘top’ marks, is made to feel miserable.
Let us encourage and motivate every young person. India is fast becoming a land of opportunity, the world is becoming a global village, fascinating new careers are opening up, and innumerable good educational institutions are being created.
It is said that the careers most children of the coming generation will take up, have not been discovered yet. Our duty is to nurture the child like a plant, and allow her to grow in the direction and speed that nature has intended for her. Let us not worry so much about what a child will become that we ignore WHAT SHE ALREADY IS !
